Big thanks to the volunteer group who came out from Foresters Financial to get this groundscaping project started for us!

This juvenile red-shouldered hawk was found in someone’s yard with an injured left side in a clear show of discomfort. After intake, we observed the bird’s left shoulder was drooping and was very painful on extension.
It’s during cases like this that we feel incredibly lucky to have our own radiograph machine. This patient urgently needed x-rays, and we could get him/her into our new radiograph suite at no time at all. The rads showed that this poor baby’s shoulder and elbow are luxated way out of position, indicating that this juvenile sustained a harsh impact of some kind. As this baby hawk stays with us for continued care, s/he will need feedings 4 times a day! This little raptor is on Day 5 with us so far.
To continue assembling our new surgical suite for maximum capability, there are several items you can gift us from our Amazon wish list linked in our bio. Essentials like radiation-resistant gloves will allow us a critical step up in assisting wildlife patients. You can also sponsor this young hawk’s recovery at the donation link in our bio. Thank you!
What does it take to get these animals the help they need? π
As a 501(c)(3) wildlife rescue, Carolina Waterfowl Rescue receives no state or federal funding of any kind! It is only charitable contributions from the public that fund our work.
Till the end of May, you can donate to CWR and your donation will be DOUBLED by an anonymous donor who is matching every dollar up to $10K that we receive for the animals! Visit the donation link in our bio now. Thank you for your consideration.

#HappyMothersDay πΈ! These black-bellied whistling ducks were transferred to us from another rescue after being orphaned. They were in need of a mother figure…
As luck would have it, there is an adult black-bellied whistling duck who is a frequent visitor to the grounds here! The adult readily adopted this crew of juveniles and they now form one big, happy family. Can you tell which one is the mom in this photo? π
Thank you @heartwoodhaven for doing all the work to have these boys from a cockfighting ring. They have been through so much. We used our networks to place 12 of the roosters, and they were flown in on 2 different flights. Safe and sound, the process of feeling loved gor them has already started.
“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
There is no bird too small, no animal unimportant. We help them all.
These two bonded ducks came in today after they were dumped somewhere. They followed me all over the room and need a home with someone who appreciates how sweet they are. They don't want to be split up.
The one duck was waiting while we banded his brother and kept watching us waiting to be reunited.

With our new X-ray machine, we are finding one thing in common among geese: almost everyone is shot. These are all different wildlife patients.

Turtles are out and about especially after it rains. With all the storms in the area, turtles are being run over in record numbers.
Please make sure you are watching the road. Turtles that appear gravely injured can still be alive and may take days to die. Please stop and check turtles and make sure they are alive and connect with a rehabilitator.
This is our baby aviary. The babies are transitioned throughout the rescue. When they get big enough to be outside part of the time, we put them in this aviary. We also introduce adult Canada geese in here and other geese that are interested in fostering. Once a foster family has been created and the babies are big enough, we allow them out and to the pond. There they can roam the grounds and go out to the grass. They can learn to fly with the adults’ guidance and just be a goose. All of these smaller babies get closed into the barn at night with heat.

This video is for our monthly supporter Barbara! Barbara, we dearly hope you see this!! After our chat at Panzú Brewery a few weeks ago when we both decided to see if our donkeys liked bananas, I can say with confidence that the answer is a resounding yes π. How ‘bout that??
This is Charla! Everyone say hiiii Charla. Charla is awesome π. She is one of a few volunteers who heads up CWR’s coverage on the eastern part of the state, namely the Triangle area of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. She can’t do it alone! She has been for too long, but there are too many animals who need help. This cayuga duck Ugo was called into us by our supporter and volunteer Geoff, and with Charla’s help, Ugo who is a domestic duck, was captured and brought to CWR on Sunday from Raleigh. Thank you Geoff and Charla!
We have 3 calls from the last 24 hours of Canada geese who have been hit by cars in the Raleigh area and need capture and transport to CWR so that we can provide medical care, but it’s just not possible for one person to do everything. We love Charla and she loves the animals, and we want to get her some help. Who here is a frequent driver between Raleigh and Charlotte? Maybe for work or otherwise. If you’re already making trips back and forth regularly, consider becoming an injured animal transporter for CWR. Or if you are willing to help with meeting halfway, that makes a huge difference for the animals too!
Join our transporters group at the link in our bio or email volunteer@cwrescue.org for more info.
Wet half drowned animals are pouring in. The storm that passed through the area will mean a lot of deaths for babies. Please check your yard for wet and cold wildlife and check downed trees for nests. Text our hotline at 704 286 6330
Please support our efforts to save them. We can't do it without you. Be the difference for one of these birds tonight.

Community Gratitude Shout-Outs π«
Firstly, the Girls on the Run team at Sandy Ridge Elementary selected Carolina Waterfowl Rescue for their community impact project. This team of young runners showed us how they can accomplish anything when they put their minds to it. Clearly that must be the case if they choose to RUN FOR FUN. The team held a bake sale and raised a whopping $330!! Those must have been some good brownies. Thank you to Coach Kate, the parents, and most importantly the girls for working so hard! The fund provided direct relief to the rescue animals at CWR and you should be proud.
Similarly, the 8th grade English classes at Marvin Ridge Middle School should be so proud of themselves for the incredible results of their donation drive. A teacher (and CWR volunteer!) from the school surprised us with a car trunk loaded with all the goodies - dish soap, paper towels, sanitary wipes! The 8th grade classes had been reading Animal Farm and wanted to fundraise for a local animal rescue. We’re very grateful that we could be the recipients of their generosity. Our paper towel stock has never been higher! Thank you to the teachers, parents, and most importantly students for their impressive donation.
Lastly, a team from Foresters Financial came out to the rescue for a weekend work day and got their goose on! We were so happy for the extra help and for the work ethic and great spirit that these volunteers had. They spent their time installing some new groundscaping to one of our habitat yards. Despite different ages and skill sets, everyone from the team was so generous with their time and energy, and we are appreciative! The groundscaping is off to a beautiful start. Thank you to Foresters Financial for spending your Sunday with us.

There are a number of items on our #AmazonWishList for our new x-ray machine!! Top needs: x-ray gloves, weather stripping (for the x-ray building), some tables, fly boots for our donkeys, and chlorhexidine.
We are very excited that we received a grant for this important piece of equipment. An imaging machine onsite means that patients who come in on Friday nights won’t have to wait till Monday morning to get x-rays. We no longer have to take animals offsite, instead we can provide immediate results for them here at CWR with our new radiograph equipment. The machine has a portable component too, which we can use on larger animals without the strain of transport. Thank you for considering a wish list donation this week!
I just can't, especially with the pants
